From Brooklyn to Portugal: This Prospect Schools Student is a World Champion Karate Kid

Prospect Schools has been educating a diverse array of students for 16 years, and that diversity isn’t limited to ethnicity, race or economic status. It also means our student body has kids with all types of interests! Take, for instance, Brooklyn High School Junior Hazel W, who, while she is a regular high school student, also represents Team USA for the WKC karate circuit.

Hazel first stepped onto the mat when she was just four years old! Fast forward to now, and she’s a first-degree black belt. We spoke with Hazel (and her mom, Jacqueline) about her incredible journey filled with local, national, and even international competitions, and why Prospect Schools was the right choice for the busy athlete.

Recent Victories and Future Goals
Hazel has been a part of Team USA for six years. Her most recent international competition took her to Lisbon, Portugal, in October, where she secured two 1st place Gold medals for the US Team and also one Bronze. “It was an amazing experience all around,” said Hazel’s mom, Jacqueline. As for Hazel, when asked how far she wants to go in karate, the goal is to “win more world titles and eventually open my own karate studio right here in Brooklyn!”’

Beyond Karate: Exploring Tricking
When not doing karate, you can find Hazel “tricking,” which is a really cool blend of gymnastics and karate that became popular in the early 2000s. “Think flips, kicks, and twists – it’s a ton of fun! I train weekly in Williamsburg with my coach Daniel and an awesome group of trickers,” Hazel said.

From Waiting List to Brooklyn Prospect
Like many Brooklyn parents, Hazel’s mom put her on the waiting list for middle school back when she was finishing up elementary. She finally landed a spot for 9th grade, and there was no question that Brooklyn Prospect High School would be her choice. “Hazel really liked the vibe at BPHS when we toured it and felt that the smaller class size and one-on-one connection she would have with her teachers was the right fit and would be extremely beneficial to her through the next four years,” said mom Jacqueline.

Juggling Schoolwork and Extracurriculars
Balancing school with competitions and training can be challenging, especially when tournaments involve lots of travel. How does Hazel keep it all balanced? “I make sure to prioritize my schoolwork by attending office hours and staying in close communication with my teachers,” she said. “I’m so grateful for the support I’ve received from the amazing staff at Brooklyn Prospect.”

Looking Ahead to College and Beyond
While Hazel hasn’t decided on a specific college yet, she told us she is interested in studying athletic training, exercise science, or business. “I want to be fully prepared to open my own studio one day,” she said.

We’ll be right there rooting for her!
