Prospectors from International Elementary School helped spread winter cheer on News 12 Brooklyn on December 14.
International Elementary School (IES) Music Teacher Mr. Kyle Garcia’s 4th- and 5th-grade classes made the top five in “Songs of the Season,” an online contest featuring singing groups across the borough. The contest clip featured Mr. Garcia coaching his 5th-grade singers in a rendition of “In Winter,” a children’s choral song by Rebecca Rossiter.
The performance clip, which aired four times throughout the morning and evening newscasts on December 14, featured footage from IES’ Dec. 8 Winter Concert:
Mr. Garcia said there was a palpable excitement in the air in the days leading up to the close of the contest.
“A lot of it is just the magic of music,” he said. “There is this intangible way that music can convey a message different from any other art form.”
The announcement that they made the Top 5 in the contest was the perfect segue to his classes’ annual concert, which this year took place on December 6 and had the theme “In Winter.”
“The kids are something else. They are bright, observant, loving, goofy, and eager to learn,” said Garcia, who is working toward his doctorate in music education from Boston University. “Each day of school at IES is a gift, and I am constantly thankful for the opportunity that I have to be able to make music with these incredible people.”
The “Songs of the Season” segment aired at the end of the network’s 5:30 AM, 7:30 AM, 8:30 AM and 10:30 PM news blocks before they cut to break on Dec 14 on News 12 Brooklyn. We are so proud of our Prospectors!
